The Walt Disney Company Senior Data Engineer in Santa Monica, California

Job Summary:

Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED) brings together the Company’s

best-in-class product, technology, and commercialization teams together into one

global organization. DMED is responsible for the P&L management and all

distribution, network and engineering operations, sales advertising, data and certain

key technology functions worldwide for the Company’s content engines. DMED also

manages operations of the Company’s streaming services including Disney+, Hulu,

ESPN+ and Disney+Hotstar; and domestic broadcast and cable television


The DMED Ad Platform integrates with thousands of advertisers, with over a billion

ads served per month. Before being served to a viewer, each one of these ads goes

through a sophisticated workflow involving sales and planning, targeting, trafficking,

and quality control, to deliver maximum value to our advertisers while maintaining

an engaging experience for viewers.

At DMED Ad Platform, data is essential for all our decision-making needs whether it’s related to product design, measuring advertising effectiveness, helping users discover new content, or building new businesses in emerging markets. This data is deeply valuable and gives us insights into how we can continue improving our service for our users, advertisers, and our content partners. Our Ad Platform team is seeking a highly hardworking Senior Data Engineer with a strong technical background and is passionate about diving deeper into Big Data to develop state of the art data analytics solutions.

  • Handles critical data that is essential to Hulu’s decision-making needs as they relate to product design, measuring advertising effectiveness, helping users discover new content, and building new businesses in emerging markets

  • Develops and optimizes ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) processes by working closely with multiple data partners and stakeholders across the company to meet the growing business needs

  • Defines technical requirements and data architecture for the underlying data warehouse

  • Collaborates with subject matter experts across different business units to design, implement, and deliver insightful analytic solutions

  • Develops analytics for accuracy, scalability, and high performance on large data sets

  • Designs and implements insightful reports to support analytics developed for large data sets

  • Works with at least one major database system, such as SQL server, MySQL, or Oracle

  • Utilizes data integration toolsets and distributed data solutions (Hadoop, Redshift, Snowflake)

  • Writes and maintains ETL jobs, creates tuning queries using SQL/TSQL

  • Utilizes database administration skills, including backup and recovery and index tuning; programming using Java, C#, Scala or related

  • Utilizes scripting skills such as Python/JavaScript.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics, Computer Science, or Information Systems

  • 4+ years of data engineering experience developing large data systems

  • 2+ years of experience on AWS and its web service offering such as S3, Aurora, Glue, EC2, EMR, Lambda, CloudWatch

  • Experience in designing scalable data pipelines, complex event processing, analytics components using big data technology such as Spark, Python, PySpark, and Scala

  • Proven experience with at least one major RDBMS (SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle)

  • Expert level experience with SQL/TSQL and ability to create and tune queries

  • Implement data structures using the best methodologies in data modeling

  • Agile and Scrum experience

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
