Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution Principal Counsel - National Geographic in Washington, District Of Columbia

The Networks and Business Operations Legal Team (NET-BOLT) partners with various businesses across the Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution division. We are responsible for advising the TV networks, including ABC and its owned stations, ESPN, Disney, FX, Freeform, and National Geographic, as well as the streaming services, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, on all of their business operations. Our legal work spans content acquisition, corporate strategy, data, marketing, media buying, and a number of other transactional and counseling matters.

NET-BOLT is looking for an experienced media lawyer to have direct legal responsibility for the National Geographic magazine newsgathering and publishing efforts. The position will have direct oversight for legal issues involved in the preparation, publication and distribution of podcasts, magazine and digital stories on behalf of the National Geographic magazine (e.g. libel, privacy, trespass, subpoenas, fair use, copyright). The position will be expected to closely partner with the editorial team to tell the important stories of National Geographic. In addition, this position will counsel executives and work with lawyers from relevant internal groups (e.g., employment, communications, global public policy, government relations, intellectual property, licensing, litigation, marketing, media operations, immigration, programming, regulatory, rights and clearances, security, social media, trade and compliance) on a wide range of deals and strategic initiatives.

You will be asked to primarily support National Geographic Magazine and Image Collection/Photo Archives teams with respect to: (i) text and image editorial matters, (ii) image collection uses, (iii) pre-publication reviews; and (iv) litigation matters.

Responsibilities :

  • Drafting and negotiating a wide variety of agreements, including for: (i) content creators, independent contractors, artists, writers, photographers, designers, outside funders and co-publishers; and (ii) editorial and commercial uses of photographs from the National Geographic Photo Archives.

  • Conducting pre-publication review of news stories, photographs and podcasts.

  • Providing guidance to litigation teams on threatened/actual litigation scenarios.

  • Reviewing and advising on retraction demands, takedown requests, subpoenas, and other legal claims.

  • Conducting media law training, interpreting agreements and answering rights clearance questions.

  • Reviewing and drafting third party licenses and personal, location, artifact and other releases.

  • Drafting and negotiating NFT and podcasts agreements.

Basic Qualifications :

  • At least eight (8) years of in depth in-house and/or law firm experience handling complex media, news or publishing transactions and/or litigation, with extensive drafting experience

  • Ideal candidates will have developed their skills at a law firm and honed their subject matter expertise at a large media company, after graduating with a Juris Doctorate degree

  • Meaningful experience in other relevant areas such journalism, transactional and intellectual property is a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate risk and to exercise sound legal judgment

  • Excellent negotiation, drafting, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills are required

  • Must be team-oriented with a positive “can do” collaborative attitude and have the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

Required Education :

  • JD or equivalent

  • Strong academic credentials

  • Admitted and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction in the United States or willingness and qualification to be Registered In-House Counsel.
